Mayo athletes come to the fore at half marathon championships

There were great scenes of celebration at Athenry on Sunday as Mayo AC's National Half Marathon team had huge success winning medals in three team categories and eight individual medals. The club brought a record 31 runners to the race and 13 of them came home with medals - a great result. For once AAI came up with the results on the day and a delighted Michael McGrath was able to present most of the booty at the team's HQ.

Large Mayo field in national half marathon

The national half marathon takes place next Sunday, September 2 at Athenry at 1pm. Mayo AC will have 38 athletes in the field competing in all categories as individuals and teams. This represents their largest team ever at a national championships. All Mayo AC team members are asked to be at Race HQ in the Presentation College beside the arch at Athenry by 11.30am to enable team declaration and registration. Members not running are encouraged to go along in support.

Byrne turns in another strong performance

John Byrne turned in another sterling performance in Seregno near Milan on Sunday, finishing in 7:16:30 in the World and European Championships. And in turn he helped the Irish team to a superb sixth place finish in the World section (provisional result).

Another exciting chapter in the athletics life of Mayo AC's John Byrne was written on Saturday. The story began at 10am deep within Donadea Forest Park in Kildare. Sixty-five brave souls gathered for the Donadea 50k, excellently organised by Donadea Running Club. The race doubled as the Irish 50k Championships.

Ernie Deacy to be honoured at the C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards

Ballina Athletic Club is this year hosting the 2011 C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards which will be held at a gala function in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on Sunday next February 26. Athletes from all over Mayo will be honoured for their contribution to athletics during the past year. Certificates or awards will be presented to all athletes who won national medals in 2011. Another person to be honoured on the night is Ernie Deacy who will be presented with the Hall of Fame Award for 2011.

Syron takes win at Kilbride 10k

The inaugural Kilbride 10k took place on Sunday and attracted an excellent field of some 400 runners and walkers. Conditions were calm, but persistent rain overnight carried on until the race start. The one-lap course had frequent splash-through pools and roadside streams over the first 8k and then two tough hills made it a demanding finish over the final 2k. Mark Doyle (Runworx) was first across the line in 35.04. Performance of the day was by women's race winner Sarah Syron (Mayo AC), whose gritty finish enabled her to win by nine seconds in 40.56.

Two men were rescued from their sinking boat in an incident in the bay last Thursday.

Jimmy Gaughan claims gold at international masters event

The annual home countries Masters International Cross Country championships took place on Saturday at Bellahouston Park near Glasgow. Once again the Irish team finished in overall second place to England - winners for the umpteenth time. The event took place in very difficult conditions - rain, mud, and high winds.
